Join Us at the SBOE Meeting on Social Studies TEKS

May 29, 2026

Hello, True Texans!

In my last message I asked you to save the date for the next State Board of Education (SBOE) meeting on Monday June 22 to do final vote on the proposed changes to Social Studies TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills).  I promised more details later, so here are the details!

A large group of patriots were there in April when they took public testimony for the preliminary vote, and now we need the same level of support for this final vote.  Liberals and Democrats testifying as well as the liberal Democrat members of the board have tried to weaken the proposal, and Islamic groups have tried to insert Islamic influences into the curriculum.  We need people to give testimony to support accurate history, traditional American and Texas values, and the Christian foundations of our nation.

For those in the DFW area, Patriot Mobile has again, offered to provide a free bus to the meeting.  The bus will depart from Grapevine (exact location provided upon registration), at 5:00 am, make one stop at Buccee’s in Temple, arriving in Austin at approximately 9:00 am.  The return trip will leave Austin at 6:00 pm, stop at Buccee’s and arrive back in Grapevine at approximately 10:00 pm.

Background:

For background and history, consult the SBOE website from the April meeting agenda.  This page discusses the what and why of the Social Studies review, and previous actions taken.  The legislature passed several bills during the 89th Session that affect social studies curriculum, which are discussed in this webpage write up.  If you scroll down to the bottom you’ll see the attachments,

which are the proposed social studies TEKS for elementary, middle, and high school.

The proposal was amended some during the last meeting.  If you would like to read all 8 pages of it, you can do so at this link.  But most of all, we need testimony about the general tone of the TEKS, without Islamic influence.

ACTION ITEMS:

  1. Plan to attend the meeting on June 22nd, to either testify or support others.  If you’re in the DFW area, sign up for the free bus to Austin for this meeting. Instructions on signing up to speak are listed below.
  2. If you cannot attend the meeting, submit written testimony to the board members.  Instructions on where to send written testimony is listed below
  3. Whether or not you attend, contact your own SBOE representative to let them know you support curriculum that emphasizes historic accuracy, traditional American and Texan values, and the Christian nature of our nation’s birth and development, without Islamic influence.  Don’t know who your SBOE representative is?  Find out here.

Instruction on testifying or submitting written testimony:

  • Registration for public in person testimony will open on Tuesday June 16 at 8:00 am and end at 5:00 pm on Friday June 19.  Late registration is available on site, up to 30 minutes prior to the start of the meeting.  (that would be before 7:30 am on June 22)
  • Please read the instructions at this link.  After you read the instructions, you click the link at the bottom that states that you have read and acknowledge the instructions and proceed to registration.  Fill out the registration information requested.  NOTE:  the earlier you register, the earlier you will be called during the meeting to testify.  At the April meeting, the testimony went well into the evening hours.
  • Speakers may also submit their testimony in writing to the board members. Send it to [email protected].   It’s a good idea to do this even if you plan to be there, in case time constraints or other issues prevent you from testifying in person.
  • People not planning to attend and testify in person can also submit written testimony to [email protected].
  • Because these are new proposed rules, there is also a public comment period going on right now, where you can submit comments.  You can do this at this TEA link.  The public comment period is open now until June 16.  Comments made here are included in the Texas Register.  You can comment anonymously if you wish.

Meeting Details:

  • Committee of the Full Board, June 22, 2026, 8:00 AM
  • Location:  Barbara Jordan Building, 1601 N. Congress Ave, Austin Texas, room 2.034

I decided this year I would put effort into understanding the SBOE, how it operates and what are its duties and responsibilities.  I’m still learning, and this is part of the process.  I hope you’ll join me in engaging with this important board that oversees our public education system in Texas.  Questions?  Just reply to this email.

Thanks for Staying Engaged!

Fran Rhodes, President, True Texas Project

PS:  I will not be on the bus on June 22, because I’m staying over to Tuesday the 23rd to attend and testify at the Senate State Affairs Committee on Public Education.  Maybe you can join me on Tuesday?  Just let me know and we’ll strategize about testimony.  The topic is election security, and there’s lots to unfold!
